The conversation highlighted the role of AI as a support in education.

This Thursday, the discussion “AI and Educational Practices: Disruptions, Emergencies, and Human Development” was held, organized by Colegio Hacienda Los Alcaparros. The event aimed to foster conversations about artificial intelligence in education, a crucial topic for better understanding the technological changes that children and young people face today.

In recent years, technological advancements have brought significant transformations in society and, consequently, in education. This discussion sought to reflect on how AI has been reshaping learning and explore new ways to support students in their educational journey.

The event coordinator, Mariluz Restrepo, emphasized the urgent need to “approach artificial intelligence as a radical turning point for educational practices at all levels and dimensions, knowing that these rapid technological transformations do not come with ready-made answers. As educators—teachers and families—we must learn more to discover and develop options that contribute to preparing our children and young people for a world shaped by AI.”

The conversation revolved around key questions such as:

  • What do students need to understand to interact with AI, and how can we support them?

  • How is AI redefining the purpose and meaning of educational practices?

  • What do families need to understand to address AI’s impact, challenges, and opportunities?

  • How is AI transforming the role of teachers?

The event featured national and international guests who explored AI’s role in personalized education, its potential as a tool for teachers to create more meaningful learning experiences, and the need to rethink learning environments in this new context. From an ethical perspective, speakers also stressed the importance of preserving curiosity and imagination, ensuring a balance between technology and human interaction.

During two session segments, attendees engaged in discussions with renowned researchers and educators, including Dr. Min Sun from the University of Washington, Dr. Isabel Tejada from the University of Los Andes, Professor Fabián Herrán from the University of El Bosque, Emily Goldman from Khan Academy’s international operations, and Verónica Guzmán, co-founder and director of Global Idea School. Additionally, Ecuador’s Minister of Education, Dr. Alegría Crespo, participated in the event.

This colloquium marked the sixth edition of “Brain and Learning,” an initiative by Colegio Hacienda Los Alcaparros that has been held since 2017, covering topics such as the musical brain, scientific brain, and mathematical brain, among others.
