Colombian cinema comes to theaters with international award-winning film

On May 2, ‘La Suprema’, a film that promises to captivate audiences with its mix of drama and humor, will hit theaters in the country’s major cities.

This Colombian film, directed by Felipe Holguín and produced by Tere Gaviria, is positioned as one of the most outstanding feature films of the year, addressing a reality with which thousands of Colombians can identify.

A story inspired by the resilience of a community.

The plot of ‘La Suprema’ revolves around Laureana, an Afro-Colombian teenager who dreams of becoming a boxer in the midst of La Suprema, a community struggling with social inequalities and oblivion. Filmed in just 24 days in the village of Matuya, in the municipality of María La Baja, and in the city of Cartagena de Indias, this film is inspired by the events of 1977 in San Basilio de Palenque, when Kid Pambelé disputed the world title against Peppermint Frazer.

This event not only consecrated Kid Pambelé as champion, but also made him a legend in Colombia. It also revived interest in Palenque, a Caribbean town that had fallen into oblivion, bringing it back to prominence, even when it was off the map. It is this story that inspired ‘La Suprema’, a film that combines elements of documentary and fiction to portray the resilience of a community.

Colombian Cinema shines on the international stage

Thanks to productions such as ‘La Suprema’, Colombian cinema has achieved outstanding representation in various festivals around the world. This film has been part of international film festivals such as Toronto, Freiburg, Bergen, Warsaw, Miami, and the Cartagena de Indias International Film Festival (FICCI), among others.

In addition, it has won awards in production and post-production, such as the Coral Award and the winner’s award from the Film Development Fund (FDC). These achievements are a testament to the talent and creativity that characterize the Colombian film industry.

Felipe Holguín, director of ‘La Suprema’, expresses his pride for the film’s tour in international festivals and its release in Colombia. According to him, this film reflects the reality of several peoples who still face situations of precariousness and oblivion, but who find in hope and resilience the strength to move forward.

La Suprema’ is a project produced by Cumbia Films in collaboration with Ferviente Films, Telepacífico and HD Cinema Colombia.
