Invention of possible worlds based on differences, diversity and openness.
By engaging our community with people, places and cultures in other parts of the world, we connect to promote global engagement and impact. By meeting thinkers, artists and scientists from different places, we share experiences of knowledge for our community.
We do this by creating partnerships with international organizations that increase the reach of Los Alcaparros and open up opportunities for research, programming, problem solving and exchange.
In the past, our students have had the opportunity to travel to places such as CERN, home of the large collider.
hadron particle physics in Switzerland, to work on one-of-a-kind art and science projects, and have participated in workshops with researchers at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
Our Initiatives
Our students are provided with unique academic experiences and interaction with world-class researchers while we stay at the forefront of the latest research and pedagogical methods. Our flagship events include:
Grulac Junior
The Latin American and Caribbean Youth Group, officially recognized by the UN, generates proposals on biodiversity and climate change at the regional level.
The Brain Initiative
The Brain Initiative is an annual event where each year a different aspect of brain development is explored through forums with top researchers and student projects.
Our People, Our Climate
It is an innovative documentary and photojournalism initiative that seeks to develop the storytelling skills of youth and young adults with a curriculum framework that allows them to observe and report on reality, their people and their environment. It brings together youth from Los Alcaparros, First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities in Canada and the Arctic to tell important stories about climate change through a unique cultural lens that integrates people, climate and territory.
The Paramo Project
Given our location, close to the Paramo and the Chingaza system, as well as the situation of being the country with the largest number of moors in the world, commits us as an institution and our students to act for this ecosystem growing, knowing and acting positively on this environment with a deep sense of care and protection of this environment, of this sponge so necessary for life.
Possibilities in Education
International Trips
We offer authentic experiences where students, immersed in another culture, display and strengthen their soft skills such as autonomy, leadership, critical thinking, among others, by facing debates at the Model United Nations in New York, performing on stage in front of an unknown audience at theater festivals in Europe, living with students from another culture during exchanges, or immersing themselves in the world of astro-space science at NASA.
International College Counseling
We support students who wish to study abroad through counseling and guidance services during the application process. -SAT exam at the school -College Board certified counselor -Availability of AP level courses (in development).
Masterclass
We focus on a different country or innovation initiative each month, presenting study options.
As part of this initiative, and to enrich students’ curriculum, experts give masterclasses in practical and applied skills. The goal is to learn, amplify skills and offer opportunities that open up possibilities in the education of our community.
Exchanges
We organize cultural events and academic exchanges for groups of students in grades 5 and up. These are currently being evaluated, but will begin again soon with new partnerships with organizations in Europe, Canada, Brazil and Australia.
Model UN
For several years the school has participated in the National High School Model of United Nations (NHSMUN) in New York, where our students learn through various cultural and academic activities that include visits to museums, hikes and presentations, meetings at the Colombian Consulate and with diplomatic delegations from other Latin American countries, and the visit and model session at the United Nations General Assembly.
Theater Festivals
The Theater group, highly recognized in the international artistic and pedagogical circuits, throughout its 16 years of continuous work, has had the participation of an average of 1,500 children and young people who have rotated within the curricular optional workshop, consolidating itself as a laboratory for artistic training and exploration of the communicative skills of its members.
Suzuki Method Concerts
Los Alcaparros has been a leader in teaching violin and piano through the application of the Suzuki method in the framework of an educational institution. Our Suzuki students have participated in international festivals in Japan, Peru, the United States and Italy, among others, as well as in the annual Suzuki concerts in Bogotá.
